When a news site starts publishing opinion, it faces two questions from readers: why now? and why us? As Daily View publishes the first article in The View, our new opinion section, we want to answer both directly, not as a marketing exercise, but as a statement of intent. Our mission is simple but not easy: to report truthfully, to examine critically, and to speak when silence would be a disservice to readers. News delivers facts; opinion provides context, perspective, and sometimes courage. This first column is the moment we take on both responsibilities. Why we publish In a world…

The Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation rose 0.5% in September, as higher petrol prices pushed up the cost of living days before the midterm elections. US inflation accelerated in September as consumers paid more for petrol and other goods, strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in December. The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index rose 0.5% last month, after a 0.3% rise in August, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said on Thursday. Around 20 million households will receive a £100 payment towards their energy bills this winter, chancellor John Healey announced in his first Budget on Wednesday. Homes in council tax bands A to D will have the money paid into their bank accounts, at a cost of £2.6bn, as rising energy prices linked to the war in the Middle East squeeze family finances. “Let me say this to families at home. The search giant says the competition watchdog has no power to make it offer users a choice of AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude. Google has accused Britain’s competition watchdog of an “unlawful” attempt to force it to promote rival artificial intelligence services. The company is fighting plans by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that would require it to offer users a choice of AI assistants, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, rather than steering them towards its own Gemini. Google argues the proposals are anti-competitive and breach the CMA’s own rules. Under the plans, Google would…

Officials say connections still drop for drones flying faster than 160km/h, a day after Donald Trump said Elon Musk had restored Ukraine’s access. Speed restrictions on Starlink satellite internet in Ukraine are still in place, Ukrainian officials said on Friday, contradicting US President Donald Trump’s claim that the service had been fully restored. Five Ukrainian officials familiar with the matter told Reuters that the restrictions, which disrupt connections for drones flying faster than 160km/h (100mph), were still in force. Trump said on Thursday that Elon Musk, chief executive of Starlink’s operator SpaceX, had restored Ukraine’s access. The Wall Street Journal…

Lawmakers from both parties want the president to enforce sanctions he signed into law last month, setting up possible clashes after the midterm elections. Donald Trump’s moves to ease economic pressure on Russia while stepping up criticism of Ukraine have drawn opposition from both parties in Congress, a backlash that could complicate his agenda after next month’s midterm elections. At the same time, he…

Donald Trump has called for Volodymyr Zelensky to be replaced as Ukraine’s president, saying the country needs a leader who can make a deal to end the war with Russia. “He better damn well stop,” Trump told reporters at the White House, after Kyiv carried on striking Russian oil refineries. “I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal,” he said of the Ukrainian president. The remarks came a day after Trump…

Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the tribunal a “rogue court”, while the ICC urged the countries that created it to come to its defence. The US imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Friday, hours after one of its former judges, Navi Pillay, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The measures go further than earlier US action against individual court officials. They could punish companies that provide services to the court itself, and put Washington at odds with European allies that are among the tribunal’s strongest backers. The court called the sanctions an “assault on the rule of…
